Students’ need toward learning materials of english for tourism: a need analysis for a better english materials

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on student’s need in learning toward the material of English for Tourism. By employing survey research instrument administered to 70 - third semester students at Tourism Business Management Politeknik Negeri Sambas and followed up with semi-structured interview, the finding was elaborated descriptively. Based on the outcome of the study it was found that grammar, vocabularies become two important aspects of language learning that students consider to be included in teaching materials. It was because they got difficulties in understanding something to do with grammar and found difficulties as they did not recognize the vocabularies. Moreover, the students expected the learning materials can provide them place for practice the pronunciation. In addition, the majority of students preferred learning the language through audio- visual and games. Furthermore, the material was also expected to integrate local wisdom in Sambas related to destination, historical place, traditional food, and festival. Thus, it is suggested that the English materials should cater students need on the aspects that have been discussed.
